The ceremony

The ceremony will take place on Friday, August 26, 2022, at 6 pm, in the church of Agioi Theodoroi on the island of Thodorou (weather permitting *).

Departure from Agia Marina Beach (opposite to Piraeus Bank):

Thodorou (the two rocky islets of Thodorou and Thodoropoula) are located north of Agia Marina and are uninhabited. The islet where the church is located is a protected area as a refuge for the Cretan Goat – the famous Kri-Kri – and is included in the NATURA 2000 network (EU Habitats Directive). Approaching and disembarkation on the islet is prohibited for the general public, with the exception of the celebration of the church of Agioi Theodoroi that has been built on the island (in June).

Having obtained a special permit by the Forest Administration (under the supervision of which is the islet) as well as by the Port Authorities, for the first time in history, the disembarkation will be allowed in Thodorou for the ceremony of the baptism of Iliostalakti. However, strict rules must be observed in order to ensure the tranquility and well-being of the animals that are on the island and not to have the slightest disturbance of the natural habitat. Please note that:

  • Smoking is strictly forbidden
  • It is forbidden to use any material or device that can cause fire (sparklers, flammable materials, generators, etc.)
  • Pollution of the space is prohibited
  • No shouting, no music
  • The length of our stay on the island is limited, everyone must leave right after the end of the ceremony

Our departure will be from the beach of Agia Marina with boats from 5 o’clock in the afternoon. The distance to the island is 10 minutes, but please be at the dock early as only three itineraries will take place. If you come by car, please also note that you will need time to park, as the area is busy during the summer.

The boats will leave us on a small dock. The place is guarded; only the guests of the baptism will be able to go up, so please have with you the identification items that will be distributed. The ascent to the chapel takes 10-15 minutes on foot. It is not very difficult as there is a clean path, but because the road consists of natural steps made of rocks, it is recommended to use sneakers to avoid accidents especially for young children (girls in no case high-heels, please keep them for the party afterwards).

As you climb do not forget to take a look behind you, you will see the coastline of Chania and the White Mountains, a magnificent view. Also often check the rocks around, maybe a friendly kri-kri will make its appearance!

* In case the weather does not allow us to take the boats, the baptism will take place in the church of Agios Mamas, within walking distance from our departure point in Agia Marina. We will know 1-2 days in advance and we will inform you accordingly.
